Weston State Hospital : Gallery Subject: Weston State Hospital, Weston, WV. Background: In 2007, this hospital was renamed "TransAllegheny Lunatic Asylum" by its new owners. This is a place of tragedy, despair and darkness. Truly, just like many of its kind, it brought out the worst in those who lived there AND those who worked there as healthcare professionals. I spent eight hours exploring the now defunct buildings and have posted here the images that I believe best communicate the spirit (however sad and tragic) of the place. My approach to photographing this site, was to shoot at low angles whenever possible. Doing so brings in a child-like perspective. I chose this approach, because it is my belief that the moment one enters a mental health hospital, you are reduced to the status of child, having no power or say in what events are decided for you. Also, the fear in these places is palpable, especially in a place like Weston State, where too often power was abused and people were mistreated and some purported to have been murdered. Although the "Lunatic Asylum" is an attraction for ghost hunting and who knows, maybe there is a lingering spirit or two, I can tell you with all certainty that it was much more frightening when its inhabitants were alive.
